Precision bearing manufacturer Schaeffler (UK) Ltd has launched a range of high performance toroidal rolling bearings with angular adjustment capability, which provide high operational reliability, even under heavy loads.
The FAG TORB range of toroidal rolling bearings is manufactured to Schaeffler’s premium quality X-life standard. The bearings are single row rolling bearings with long, slightly spherical rollers, enabling the FAG TORB to combine the angular adjustment capabilities of a spherical roller bearing with the axial displacement capabilities of a cylindrical or needle roller bearing. This means the bearings are suitable for a variety of industrial applications, including steel rolling mills (e.g. continuous casting plants), belt and conveyor systems, paper machines (e.g. drying cylinders), marine drives, turbomachinery used in power generation (e.g. ventilators), textile machines, crushers, food processing machines, and agricultural machinery.
FAG TORB toroidal rolling bearings are available in two versions: as full complement bearings or as a caged version. When the design envelope is restricted, the caged bearing provides very high radial load carrying capacity, even when skewing or axial displacements need to be compensated for. The full complement bearing offers a particularly high load carrying capacity.
More than double the operating life
FAG TORB bearings allow the operational reliability and cost-effectiveness of locating/non-locating bearing supports to be significantly increased.
Temperature-related linear expansion and misalignments mean that non-locating bearing designs are particularly important. FAG TORB bearings are the perfect non-locating bearing for use in combination with a spherical roller bearing as the locating bearing, allowing either higher load ratings or a smaller design envelope to be achieved compared to conventional locating/non-locating bearing arrangements.
FAG TORB toroidal rolling bearings compensate for large axial linear expansion between the raceways and rolling elements in the bearing. Even when greater axial displacement occurs, the load is still distributed symmetrically to the roller rows in the (locating) spherical roller bearing. FAG TORB bearings also dampen the axial vibrations of the entire bearing system, reducing the stress on the spherical roller bearing, which in turn positively influences the operating life of the entire bearing system. Potentially, the operating life can be more than doubled, while the overall operating costs (TCO) are lower due to a reduction in maintenance costs and downtime.
Complete interchangeability with previous bearing designs is also provided, as FAG TORB bearings are manufactured to the same ISO dimensions as spherical and cylindrical roller bearings that are used as non-locating bearings.
Two designs for very high load carrying capacities
If the design envelope is restricted, the FAG TORB caged version provides a very high radial load carrying capacity, even if skewing or axial displacements need to be compensated for. The full complement bearing design with the suffix ‘V’ offers a particularly high load carrying capacity.
The concave raceways of the inner and outer ring are positioned centrally in relation to the centre of the bearing, and the matched raceway profiles ensure both optimum stress distribution in the bearing and low friction running. The self-guiding rollers always position themselves in such a way that the load is distributed evenly over the complete length of the rollers, even if the rings are skewed or have shifted relative to one another.
FAG TORB bearings are characterised by their high operational reliability and long operating life. The bearings are dimensionally stable up to an operating temperature of 200°C as standard. Due to its high load carrying capacity, the full complement version is suitable for use in steel processing applications such as continuous casting plants.
X-life premium quality rolling bearings
X-life is the Schaeffler seal of quality for very high performance INA and FAG branded bearings. X-life bearings are characterised by their higher rating and operating life – the result of higher dynamic load ratings compared to those of standard bearings. This higher performance is a result of state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies and improved internal bearing designs. This produces better, more even surfaces and contact surfaces, which optimises load distribution in the bearing. FAG TORB bearings are manufactured in X-life quality, which means their load ratings are up to 15% higher than comparable premium bearings from competitors.
