NSK offers bespoke solutions for papermaking sector

NSK bearings deliver a guarantee of greater durability, speed and reliability, all of which serve to increase machine productivity and performance in paper mills worldwide. An example of this is in the wire section of modern papermaking facilities, water ingress together with the demand for ever-greater speeds can prompt premature bearing failure and potential production line stoppages. However, NSK can offer an innovative solution in the form of its Molded-Oil bearings, which are particularly effective in environments exposed to dust and/or water contamination. Alternatively, where ultra-high speeds are required, NSK has assisted numerous wire sections with its HPS range of spherical roller bearings.

NSK Molded-Oil bearings are especially effective in environments exposed to dust and/or water contamination.

Moving to the press section, where high loads and speeds mean the selection of a non-optimal bearing can cause failures such as raceway peeling, NSK offers its triple-ring bearings. These are available in either cylindrical/spherical roller bearing combination (2SL series) or spherical/spherical roller bearing configuration (2PSL series). The use of HPS spherical roller bearings with solid brass cages is a further solution that is proven in press sections.

The dry end section of a paper mill not only features high loads and high speeds, but elevated temperatures of up to 150°C. As a consequence, the internal ring of bearings may become prone to breakage. To help eliminate this issue, NSK has developed TL series spherical roller bearings. Besides special heat treatment that guarantees high dimensional stability, the steel in the TL series features a chemical composition that makes the inner and outer rings extremely resistant to wear and cracking. Also available from NSK are cylindrical roller bearings with a self-aligning outer ring (RUB series) that prevent the problems of irregular wear and help withstand unpredicted skews. Like the wire and press sections, HPS spherical roller bearings are also a popular solution in the dry end section, where they can be equipped with either a solid brass cage or a forged steel cage according to the selected dimensional range.

In the calender section, machine cylinders are subject to high loads and speeds which can lead to fatigue wear on spherical roller bearings and dilatation of the inner ring, while elevated temperatures can also cause failures. Here, the NSK TL-RUB series of cylindrical roller bearings has been developed so that calender rollers can expand thermally without restraints and therefore assure higher running accuracy and resistance to temperatures up to 200°C in continuous operation. Other calender section solutions available from the NSK portfolio are TL-standard spherical roller bearings, HPS spherical roller bearings and triple-ring bearings.

About NSK

Established 100 years ago, NSK (Nippon Seiko Kabushiki Kaisha) is a Japanese-listed company that has evolved from a regional ball bearing supplier to a roller bearing specialist and automotive supplier with a global market presence. Today, NSK employs more than 31,000 employees in 30 countries. As per March 2015 NSK achieved a turnover of 975 billion Yen. This result has been driven by ever-increasing investment in research & development, enabling the company to continuously improve the quality of its products and services. This investment supports NSK’s objective of “No. 1 in Total Quality”. In addition to a complete rolling bearing portfolio, NSK develops and manufactures precision components and mechatronic products, as well as systems and components for the automotive industry, including wheel bearing units and electric power-steering systems. 2 / 3 In 1963, NSK’s first European subsidiary, Düsseldorf, Germany, was opened and in 1976, the first European production facility in Peterlee, England. Today, NSK Europe supports pan-European sales with production locations in England, Poland and Germany, logistics centres in the Netherlands, Germany and England and technology centres in Germany, England and Poland. In 1990, NSK purchased the UPI Group including the renowned European bearing manufacturer RHP, with its factory in Newark (UK). Additionally, NSK has developed a comprehensive network of authorised sales distributors. NSK Europe is divided into application-based business divisions: Industry rolling bearing technologies & linear and precision technology (EIBU) as well as bearing modules and steering systems for the automotive industry (EABU & ESBU). In this organisation, NSK Europe’s 3,500 employees achieved a turnover of over 1,000 million Euros as per March 2015. For more information, visit www.nskeurope.com
