The forum’s opening address will be given by Professor Dr Michael ten Hompel, Chair of Materials Handling and Warehousing at TU Dortmund University and director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (Fraunhofer IML). His paper is titled: “Logistics 4.0: The world will turn itself on its head – because it can”. The abstract is as follows: “It’s 2018, and all the technologies needed to make the fourth industrial revolution a reality is already available. As the driving force of the fourth industrial revolution, logistics will play a key role in this. Forklifts are becoming autonomous guided vehicles, parts bins are becoming cyber-physical systems, and the classic transportation and materials handling industry is becoming a mainstay of the platform economy. The race is on, and victory will go to those who are the fastest at developing digital technologies into new, high-utility business models.”
