Upfield, a global leader in plant-based foods, proudly announces the world’s first plastic-free, recyclable tub for its plant butters and spreads. This launch signifies the initiation of Upfield’s shift toward a paper-based solution across its portfolio, aligning with the company’s ambitious goal to reduce plastic content by 80% by 2030.

The groundbreaking paper tubs, developed from compressed wet paper fibers, boast waterproof, oil-proof qualities and are recyclable within local paper waste streams. Endorsed with Conventional Plastic Free Certification and utilizing paper from a PEFC-certified supplier, these tubs feature a grease-proof paper lid developed by EMSUR, enhancing the overall sustainability of the proposal.

José Herráez, Emsur’s General Manager, emphasizes the importance of the close collaboration with the customers, to fully understand their needs and to provide the most efficient solutions. “Only by being close to our customers we can understand their needs and proactively work in identifying the best solutions. This is the way EMSUR understands the business”.

Álvaro Bernad, Chief Innovation Officer at Grupo Lantero, underscores the significance of EMSUR’s grease-proof paper lid, emphasizing its role in making the tub a fully sustainable material. Not only is it entirely recyclable, but it also promises to delight conscious consumers who prioritize environmentally friendly options.

Walter Turci, Innotech Director, reflects on the challenges faced during the development of the grease-proof paper lid. Designed as an alternative to the standard ALU solution in the market, the lid ensures similar performance in packaging machines for food producers and an enhanced product experience for end customers. Overcoming challenges related to fat resistance and sealability, the Innotech team has dedicated over 24 months to this project and has proudly ended presenting an innovative solution that meets our customer expectations.
